We offer our services to academia, businesses, investors and researchers - in need of the kind of IP support, in part or in full, that comes from tapping into a network of experienced and qualified staff, operating as your in-house IP- department.

   Companies

We are a strategic partner for once off, or continuous discussions with an aim to identify the best possible IP strategy and IP protection, taking into account market data and R&D plans. We provide expert opinions and recommendations when new opportunities present.

Some important questions are as follows:
  • How can the value of the company be improved from the use of IP?
  • What is the competition doing?
  • What can you commercialise, sell – develop?
  • Is the size of the commercial market large enough to make the investment in patent protection worthwhile?
  • Are there cost effective alternatives when filing a patent application, to keep the overall costs of the project down?
  • How do you defend your business if someone is infringing your IP rights?

When you start a new project, or have new ideas, we can perform detailed searches and analyses that taken together with a description of the technology and the invention may underpin a Patent Synopsis™. The former Synopsis may form the basis of a patent application, which is finalised and filed by a patent attorney in the country most suitable from a business perspective. Our analysis always considers market needs and business opportunities.

We work independently of, but collaboratively with, patent attorneys as if we were your own in-house patent-department. If we consider a patent application unsuitable for a particular project, we provide recommendations for more lucrative options. Perhaps we can suggest alternative means of IP protection? For existing patents/patent applications, we may be able to suggest more cost effective alternatives. Do contact us to provide a cost estimate for a new or ongoing matter!

We recommend an annual review of the IP portfolio to assess whether the content reflects current R&D and business strategies. We have developed a service, Triangelövning™, to map out alignment between the IP portfolio, business development and/or market plans, as well as how the IP portfolio stacks up compared to activities of the competition.

Furthermore, SYNERGON can take over the responsibility for managing IP administration for companies in its entirety, under the umbrella of the service referred to as IP Monitor™. Alternatively, we may coordinate your ongoing efforts with our specialist knowledge to find a solution that fits you. We can commit to communicate with patent attorneys and monitor ongoing costs, even after patents are granted, as well as monitor infringement related activities. We always follow up our findings directly with you as the owner of the IP rights.

   Academia

Our offer to individual researchers and to academia broadly, including, for example, incubators, science parks and business development/innovation managers, is to further strategic discussions with an aim to identify the best possible IP protection for the business opportunities that a R&D project may result in.

Important questions include:
  • What is the rest of the world doing?
  • Where are the commercially relevant gaps in the IP landscape?
  • Can I get assistance with a preliminary assessment of, for example, patentability?
  • How do you keep costs down when seeking and maintaining patent protection?

We can help you along the entire journey from the lab bench to commercialisation!
To apply for a patent, and other forms of IP protection, is a key business decision. The aim is to protect the future business, not a technology per se. Early on in a project, it is important to identify what a future business opportunity may look like in order to ensure optimal IP protection. Our experienced consultants can assist you with devising the appropriate IP strategy.

   Incubators and Science Parks/Investors

We have tailored services in relation to IP analyses to individual investors, portfolio managers, or other owners and/or managers of R&D focused companies. These services are performed either by SYNERGON, or someone in our immediate network, and may include, for example, the following services:

  • Comparing IP protection with current business strategies
  • IP assessment of a company or project, including IP Due Diligence
  • Focusing on cost effectiveness, or reducing the costs of an IP portfolio
  • Systematic, global surveillance of your company or project
  • Freedom to Operate/Freedom to Exclude, concering specific matters

Our strength lies in that we work with IP questions from a business perspective, e.g., finding the optimal IP protection for a particular business strategy. This means that in addition to the traditional technical and legal assessment of a project or company, we focus on analysing whether the IP rights really protect the proposed business, today and into the future. We can further provide information in relation to IP related activities of competitors. Our consultants have industry experience and offer qualified assistance in relation to IP strategies.
